Seven Tips for a Well-Organized Bathroom

It's hard for a bathroom to be a relaxing haven if it's always a mess. And the average bathroom gets cluttered quickly. When you keep all your medications, makeup, grooming materials, shower materials, towels and toilet paper, and first aid items in one small room, you've got to be extra-vigilant to keep things neat and organized.

Toy Bin Shelf

Keeping your bathroom organized may take a little extra work, but the effort is worth it. Here are a few tips for staying on top of the clutter in your bathroom.

Toy Bin Shelf

Throw out what you don't use. Before starting to organize your bathroom, go through everything you keep there. Be prepared to throw a lot of things away. Any makeup, soap, shampoo, or medicine that's over a year old should go in the bin. Same with chronically mildewed toys, ripped or threadbare towels, rusty nail clippers, and anything else that isn't necessary and you don't use on a regular basis. Throw out what you don't need first, and you'll have less to organize later.

Have a towel rack for each person. If lots of people use a bathroom in the rush to get out the door in the morning, towels and washcloths can accumulate quickly-especially if there are kids involved. Make it easy for people to hang up towels: install a rack for each person who uses the bathroom. If you have kids, install hooks instead of racks; they're more likely to use them.

Use drawer dividers. Sick of opening your makeup drawer to a jumble of lipsticks, eyeshadows, and other cosmetics? It can be a hassle to rifle through your drawers every morning looking for your favorite shade of lip gloss. Organize your makeup drawer with dividers or even a cutlery organizer from the kitchen. These work great for any drawer full of small grooming implements.

Buy a shower caddy. Showers don't often have a lot of space for shampoos and soaps-but leaving your shampoo along the edge of the tub can make your bathroom look cluttered and messy. Hang a shower caddy from your showerhead with enough room to store everyone's shampoos, bath gels and soaps. This will allow everyone in your household to keep their favorite bath products on hand, without cluttering up your tub or shower.

Maximize your shelf space. Most people need every inch of storage space they can get in the bathroom-it's a small room with a lot of items to store. If you have a small bathroom or one without a lot of built-in storage space, you'll need to get creative. Install shelves in unused walls. Buy a cabinet designed to go over the toilet, or buy corner shelves that can be installed in the corner by the bathroom vanity. This will allow you extra space to keep linens, makeup, jewelry, and other necessities.

Use small containers or baskets. One of the most aggravating things about the bathroom is the amount of shampoos, soaps, hair gels, and shower gels you need to find a home for. You also have first aid materials such as band-aids and antibiotic ointment, which you need to be able to access quickly. In order to keep your bathroom necessities organized, buy containers or baskets and label them for each type of item. Keep first-aid items in one container, hair products in another, nail-care items in a third, and so on. Make sure to label each container clearly.

Color coordinate. If you have a large family sharing a bathroom, you may experience some conflict with sharing this small place. Teens and tweens can be territorial, especially about grooming products. Help them keep their things separate by giving each kid a color-coded container for makeup, hair gel, and other important products. In addition, color-code toothbrushes, towels, washcloths, and even shampoos. This way, you can monitor who makes the biggest messes without blaming all the kids for a cluttered bathroom. This may mean less conflict over messes in the long run.

It's easy for a bathroom to get messy, but it doesn't have to be difficult to keep things organized. Spend a few hours setting up a system, buy some organization products such as drawer dividers and containers, and throw out items you don't use-and you should be able to keep your bathroom clean and clutter-free.

Tips For Staying Organized

Getting organized can sometimes be a bit like quitting smoking. As Mark Twain put it, "I've done it hundreds of times." Here's how to stay organized after you've done a major re-haul of your stuff.

Toy Bin Shelf

1) One thing in, one thing out

Toy Bin Shelf

This rule will help to keep you from filling up all the empty space you've just created. There is a strong but subtle drive to go get more stuff after we've cleaned out the cabinets. Some part of you thinks, "look at all that room... I can go get more stuff!" And off you go to the stores, spending money that could be better spent or saved for other things to go get stuff you don't need that you'll be tripping over and disgusted with in just a few weeks.

To break the "let's go get more stuff" habit, make a rule for yourself that for everything new you bring into your house, you have to get rid of something old. This will make you much less likely to buy things you don't need. However, do be flexible with this rule. If you decided to get rid of your old vacuum, for example, because it never worked well, and you just came home with a new vacuum, then you may not need to force yourself to go find something to get rid of. However, if you are a hopeless collector of birdhouses, and you just found an amazing, one of a kind birdhouse you just had to have, maybe you should take a hard look at one of the cheap plastic birdhouses that you were keeping just to fill space on your birdhouse wall. This can be a great way to improve a collection over time, and it works wonders in clothes closets.

2) Have a giveaway bin

Get an empty recycling bin and put things you don't need any more in it. When it is full, put it in your car and drop it off at Goodwill when you are nearby. Simply having a designated place to put the stuff you don't want or don't need any more means you can actually let go of it, instead of just leaving it lying around your house until you're full up to the rafters again.

3) Leave a third empty

This is for advanced declutterers only, but it works and it is the only way I have kept my house clutter-free for over two years now. Leave a third of every container, shelf or closet empty when you do your re-organization. Leaving this empty third is great for a number of reasons. First of all, it gives you room to clean and move things around and rearrange what's there, which makes using stuff a bit less of a hassle. It almost makes smaller spaces seem more roomy, and leaves you feeling like everything is not just crammed into your house (which can make us feel a little crammed in, too). Finally, it gives you plenty of wiggle room for when you break rule #1 and start acquiring more stuff despite all of your best intentions.

Building Trust in Ecommerce - The Three Dimensions Of Trust From An Informatics Perspective

Three dimensions of consumer trust for online interaction have been created as a cause of the importance of trust for click-and-mortar firms relative to the ordinary physical vendors, brick-and-mortar. Creating and sustaining trust via the Internet requires different conceptualization and thus the three dimensions of consumer trust, competence, integrity and benevolence, are indeed very important.

Toy Bin Shelf

Low confidence of online purchasing has been identified by a U.S. study which showed that only 21% of consumers were confident over their personal information being transferred when involved in an online purchase. That is why these dimensions of trust in connection with interface design, IT-security and electronic payment can be enhanced and thus Internet vendors can gain and maintain consumer trust. We should keep in mind that trust is created at different stages and to a different degree. Trust starts with the interface design and perceiving and approving it, and then moves on to security and privacy where transaction are made. If an Internet vendor can control the three stages with the right tools and well-designed systems they will ultimately win trust. All the three stages are mutually exclusive and one cannot be foregone on the cost of another.

Toy Bin Shelf

Informatics perspective on consumer trust

Interface design

Initial trust starts at this point. Just as you may enter a physical store and witness the aisles and shelves and see products and advertisements your impressions are being constructed. In a similar way as a store is organized and designed so must a virtual store-front be. This initial trust is pivotal to keeping consumers on the site and making them come back (retaining). A few characteristics of good interface design (suggested by expert authors) that will attract customers and keep them coming back, are: Ease of navigation, consistency, learnability, user guidance, and perception. These all belong to the usability of the vendors' website and are important sources of trust.
Ease of navigation: Ease of finding what you want and knowing where you are in the Web site. Consistency: In human-computer interaction, consistency is recognized to be able to improve user performance and user satisfaction. It applies internally to the web site and externally to other websites through standards and conventions. Learnability: A well-designed interface should be easy to learn. This is achieved through the use of simple and clear language, meaningful display and logical grouping. User guidance or support: A good user guidance scheme will improve learnability and decrease the mental workload. Perceptual limitation (perception): A good interface design should embed the considerations of human perceptual organization limitations.

Navigation and learnability of a website must maintain its simplicity and prioritize over what information is the most important to be displayed on the front page. Making the navigation user-friendly and clear, at the same time making the site intuitive so the next revisit will be already familiar with the functions it presents, is key to usability.

Furthermore, for example, user guidance or support can envisage an Internet vendor having a thorough step-by-step guidance on procedures done on the website. Like having guidance on how to successfully search an e-catalogue, or even more importantly display a step-by-step payment method so the customer will feel safe/secure before engaging in purchasing something from the vendor. Coupled with providing FAQ and pages that answer most commonly asked question, the feedback system is well prepared. Intuitively we can conclude when it comes to the interface design that the perception (the initial impression) serves as the most significant determinant of trust. For example, competence of a firm is seen through the professionalism of the site, based on institutional-based trust.

Research on interpersonal/ visual cues have determined the impact it has on consumers assessment of Internet vendors professionalism and competence. What is meant by this is that the availability of graphics/photos can induce customer trustworthiness to some extent when the interface is designed. Graphics of products, trust seals, pictures of personnel, can create some sort of credibility amongst consumers. In addition, these cues can enhance consumer trust in a firm deliberately. A good example of a cue is when a vendor has a license for TRSTEe for privacy assurance in logo-format displayed on the interface. As we will see privacy and security policies serve to create confidence amongst consumers through these cues.

Another important thing to consider is the user-centered perspective a web designer can appropriate when creating the interface. Before establishing trust from the security point of you, you have to take into account the user experience. So the User-centered design (UCD) method might just do this in consolidating both designers and users needs of an interface. For once the user is put in the spotlight and inquired so as to design a interface that will appeal to the general consumer. In addition, many experts in the field stress the importance of Human-Computer interaction (HCI) when designing an interface, since just like UCD it is an inter-disciplinary subject working on the interaction between users and computers. The whole point is to make the computers comprehension of consumer wants closer to the ways humans think. These study design efforts support the third dimension of trust, benevolence.

IT-security

Security is the next step in establishing trust. Only after the end-user has browsed through the site, and has perceived and approved its professionalism and competence, only then will the consumer look to investigate the terms and agreements, the security and privacy policy. This stage is right before the consumer transacts with the vendor and the order is placed. An Internet vendor may use many security tools such as SSL, SET etc. to protect consumer and the vendor's privacy but may have a hard time rendering this information forward to the end-user and thus marketing their security and privacy issues in laymen terms.

Since there is a lot of technical jargon depicting the degree of security and privacy a site uses to protect its end-users, laying the terms and policies in laymen language would clarify to the consumer that the vendor has good intentions with keeping the consumers information secure and private. Making these policies clear for both the vendor (personnel) and the end-user would further improve trust and effectiveness and thus there would be good feedback coming from the vendor. As mentioned earlier, clear cut policies and cues that depict that this website is secure (e.g. logos of trustworthy institutions, TRUSTe logo) are a must for creating this trust. This is indicative of vendors' competence and integrity.

Before an order can be taken and processed, an Internet vendor should make sure s/he constructs a comprehensive security system that takes into account the context of its business and the group of applications used by the system. Designing the security system with the use of different programs with different degree's of security levels needs to be assessed. For example, biometric (e.g. fingerprint), non-biometric (e.g. firewall) and software security (e.g. data encryptions) are some of the security methods available for securing the consumers. I think for an ordinary Internet vendor the software security is the most appropriate level of security necessary. Aside from possessing a firewall which is standard, applications on encrypting personal data (encryption algorithm), dealing with passwords and access codes should be well designed.

What's important at this stage is to put the security in the context of the business. If you plan to sell products like toys over the Internet you would probably need security applications (basic cryptographic protection) e.g. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) for example, for your website. If you are an Internet vendor selling and providing banking services you would require more complex authentication and security mechanisms such as e.g. SET protocol. You have to make sure that while you are building trust with the consumers you do not overspend on unnecessary high-cost security systems (which will have to add costs to consumers who are using it), but rather make it comprehensive and affordable and at the same time simple. Having additional applications and software could possible hinder the consumers in terms of convenience, and it has been shown that complicated systems such as SET have failed amongst consumers, and thus gaining new customers will be more difficult. Once again, all this information must be portrayed on the Internet vendors' website in a clear and a marketing savvy manner.

Electronic payment

The next step after the completion of the comprehensive security system is the payment options and procedures. This is the part where consumers require the most trust, in terms of respect of privacy (personal data, credit card payment information) and security.
A vendor can offer a wide array of payment options, all ranging from standard credit card payments to e-checks, and micropayments. Some are widely used by a broad customer base and others are used for small/big buys. Again the context of you business has to be assessed so you, as the vendor, will provide appropriate payment options to suit your customer base and your product/service sales. You want to provide both, simplicity to users and adequate payment options.

When choosing which payments are available for your customers one should keep in mind to fulfill the main criteria attached to payments: anonymity, security, reliability, user control leverage, and reputation of the provider of the system.

The payment procedure has to be secure and protect the authentication and anonymity of the consumer, and once this is done and proven it is secure, customers will feel comfortable with the vendor. The process starts with customer ordering a product, providing personal information as well as sensitive information such as credit card numbers. This might be secured through the SSL application. This data is then communicated to the appropriate banks (e.g. vendor and customer banks). It is approved and the product is ready to be shipped. During this process the vendor must make sure to provide adequate support. If the vendor decides to alter the security settings, s/he must provide updated information of that to convince the customer. The vendor also must give the customer control and access to its information and ability to change that information and if necessary delete that information. The key here is that there is a balance between security and the ease of use of consumer's information.

Final remarks

This work from an informatics perspective analyzed what can be done to achieve trust as an Internet vendor. It concludes that perception of the website in terms of the three dimensions of trust was crucial for the interface design and that the design has to do with the user-centered and human computer interaction kind. This is the initial trust that paves way for the end-user to move on and decide to transact with the vendor. Security and payment issues try to assure the consumer in their purchases by providing a comprehensive security system with ease of use, affordability, and clarity of policies. In this way the vendor purports competence and integrity.

How to Clean a House - Guidelines For Efficiency and Effectiveness

It's not surprising that we humans like neat and tidy homes. Most animals (one exception is the Andean Zorro) like to keep the places they live clean. But, for some of us, the task of cleaning our houses may not come so easily.

Toy Bin Shelf

It's not that most people don't know how to house clean. Rather, the number one question that people have is often "Where do I start?" At times, cleaning a house can appear to be overwhelming. It can sometimes make you want to stop before you even start.

Toy Bin Shelf

To prevent this feeling of overwhelm, you need to be organized. You need to make a plan. Before you get out the rags other essential cleaning supplies, you need to make sure that everything is in its place. Another word for this is "decluttering." By tidying up first, you can avoid stopping the vacuum cleaner to pick toys off of the floor; or putting the furniture polish down to remove old magazines from the coffee table. Starting and stopping is quite trying. Therefore it is in your best interest to remove the clutter first.

The next step is to organize the cleaning products that you will use. You may want to get an apron with large pockets or a plastic bin with dividers to carry your cleaning products from place to place and room to room. Some supplies that you will want to include in your bin are window cleaner, furniture polish, rags, disinfectant spray, and carpet cleaner and room deodorizer. You need to use the right cleaning supplies for each job that you are going to tackle. Otherwise, you may end up spending more time than needed cleaning or even re-cleaning parts of your house.

You may also find it easier to carry around a garbage bag around your house with you instead of making repeat trips to and from the garbage can. Also, use the right cleaning supplies that will get the job done.

Once you have removed the clutter from a given room, then begin at the top of the room and make your way towards the floor. Remove spider webs from the corners; and for all bookcases that you have, dust the highest shelves first. This way, the dust will drop down, eventually landing on the floor where you will vacuum it. If you are right-handed, then work your way around the room clockwise. If you are left-handed, then move counter-clockwise around the room.

Another house cleaning tip is to clean one room at a time. Once you complete one room, you will feel a sense of accomplishment, which will then give you motivation to continue to the next room.

Remember that a clean house is more than just pleasant to look at. It is also an outward sign by which people often judge you. Think about it: when you walk into someone else's house, don't you almost immediately notice how clean the house is? Additionally, dirt can harbor dust mites and bacteria, which can have a deleterious effect on your family's health.

Vinegar is a magical product for so many people. Aside from making dishes fun and exciting, it also packs a lot of sanitation purposes and a lot of different combinations, hot or cold, mixed with a power or not make vinegar an all around cleanser. The "Ins and Outs" of Polyethylene Pallet Covers

"Joe! I need you to order 2,000 poly cover-bags for our shipment on the 15th!" the operations manager yells at 3:30 on a Friday afternoon. Being the purchasing agent for his company, it is inferred that Joe knows what a "poly cover-bag" is or what will be the best type, thickness, color or size to protect his product. If you know nothing about the polyethylene packaging industry, are looking for a specific answer like "how to measure" or are simply keeping up on recent market trends, this is the article for you.

Pallet Covers are used to protect your company's product during transportation and storage. These days, pallet covers also serve as an effective means of advertisement as well as oversized trash bags. This article will teach you everything your manufacturer knows regarding this product. Therefore, it guarantees you will be a more effective buyer!

Pallet Covers and Bin Liners are often listed on subsequent pages in packaging supply catalogs. This is done because, in most cases, a liner is simply an inverted cover. First we'll cover some basics of polyethylene custom films.

Polyethylene (PE) is a thermoplastic polymer, which is today's most widely used plastic. Even the now nearly obsolete plastic grocery bag is a form of PE. I say nearly obsolete as the plastic grocery bag has begun to give way to the Non-Woven Polypropylene (PP) shopping bag as a green alternative. There are several different sub-categories of Polyethylene; 10 to be more specific. I do not intend to bore you with a chemistry lesson (nor am I qualified to teach one) so we will discuss the few that are used most often in the packaging industry. There are three sub-classifications you will most likely be interested in, depending on your specific packaging needs.

They are linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE). LLDPE is known to have a higher resistance to punctures and higher overall strength than that of a LDPE. LLDPE is commonly used to make thin films due to its high strength. LLDPE can be found in stretch films, plastic wraps and nearly all polyethylene markets. Negatives for LLDPE are its smaller heat-sealing abilities and production challenges. Pallet cover users typically prefer LDPE for its "burly" chemical characteristics. It can also be found in many other applications such as playground slides and computer components. LDPE is not as dense as LLDPE and also has a lower tensile strength that requires a higher thickness be used in many applications. HDPE is more likely to be used in the manufacturing of extremely thin films such as t-shirt bags or grocery bags as it relates to our industry. Outside of the packaging industry, HDPE has many different applications and is seen as a very versatile product. We will move on with the LDPE (don't forget Joe still has to get those bags ordered!).

What color? How many MIL thick? What is a MIL? Do I need a UVI additive? Should it be a shrink blend? What size? How many do I have to buy? How much will it cost? How "green" is it? Can I get my company info printed on it? How many print colors? How many print sides? Is it safe in cold weather? What is a gusseted cover? What is a center-fold and m-fold? How are they packaged? Don't worry, we'll get there.

Our friend Joe is employed by an industry leader in the manufacturing of dog food. His company is located in Miami, FL. Knowing the what, where, how long and size are a couple of determining factors in choosing the correct liner, or in this case cover.

Let's say Joe has 40 lb bags of dog food that are produced in mass quantity, then loaded on skids and shipped to distributors all over the continental U.S. For this order, Joe will be going with a Low Density Polyethylene. If we were just looking for the lowest cost and not concerned with presentation or longevity a black, LDPE, "Repro-Blend" would be the route to go. Given today's economy coupled with our nation's concern with staying "green", this has become a very popular choice.

The company's owners are more concerned with marketing and presentation than just getting a low price. Now that we know we're looking for a LDPE film, lets get more specific. Polyethylene resins can be "virgin" or a "virgin/repro blend" in this case. Many manufacturers only use virgin resin due to its quality and aesthetic value. Plus they are unable to quote on Repro products, as they do not have poly regrind machinery. When looking for the most economical choice, it is always good to find if your source has the capability to produce a product using recycled resin. Using a resin made partially of recycled polyethylene does allow your company to market it as a "green" product. Yes, it is a "plastic bag" which for some is the farthest thing from environmentally friendly. However, if your cover will eventually be used as a trash bag or disposed of shortly after being installed this may be the most economical route.

Polyethylene pallet covers can be manufactured in a wide array of colors. They also can be "Opaque" or "tinted", which of course, refers to the color density. The pantone color system (PMS) is the most common color system used to choose these colors. As with anything, the more bells and whistles you add, the more your costs rise. If your product will spend a great deal of time sitting at its destination prior to being unpacked, an opaque color with artwork should be an option to consider. In Joe's case, the owner wants both a good looking cover and increased marketing potential. White is always a great background for any print or logo to stand out on. So Joe should suggest white opaque film be used.

Shrink covers and bags are used to cover anything from a 30' boat to a 2" wide toy. A shrink cover is made of a film that does just that when heat is applied to it. In some applications the material is covered with a shrink film and moved through a heat tunnel. Other companies will use a heat gun to shrink the material around the product. If the decision is made to go with a shrink cover, additional tools will need to be purchased. Heat tunnels and heat guns do come with a high initial investment. Shrink products include; bags, covers, tubes and films. These items are installed to keep the pallet load secure and clean during transit and storage. Joe's product is wrapped with stretch film prior to having the pallet cover installed. When this is the case, a shrink cover is not typically needed, as the load is secured by stretch film.

We learned earlier that Joe's company is located in Florida and it transports throughout the country. This is relevant information as we begin to discuss a couple of additives often used in the manufacture of pallet covers. If the company was located in Minnesota, and the product sat in sub-freezing temperatures for long periods of time, EVA would be needed. EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate) is an additive to prevent hardening and cracking due to the cold. Another common additive option requested in pallet cover production is UVI (Ultra Violet Inhibitor). This is needed if a covered load will be exposed to the sun, wind or salt spray for long periods of time. Purchasing an opaque cover does provide a degree of resistance to the sun's damaging rays. However, if you really need to be confident that the cover will protect your product from color changes due to fading, or you with to reduce bag deterioration, then the addition of a UVI is a must. Depending on the size, color and type of material, a variable amount of the additive is combined in the production of covers. For each amount there is a corresponding duration assigned to the cover's shelf life. A 6-month UVI additive and 12-month UVI additives are the most common amounts requested, as most products are either used or sold during the first 12 months. In Joe's case, the dog food bags are only exposed to the sun during transit. This, coupled with the fact that he has already chosen a white opaque film, will provide ample protection from the sun's rays.

Now that we've narrowed down the materials to be used, let's discuss measuring and a couple of more manufacturing options. How to measure for a pallet cover, or to determine the cover size required means that we first need to measure our palletized product. A gusseted pallet cover is typically used for 48"x48" pallets and many other similar sizes. Gusseted covers are very popular as they are form fitted to the product providing a nice clean look. We will cover this type of cover first. Simply measure the height, width and depth of the pallet (for depth number always use the shorter side). Once you have the width (the wider side) measured add 1"-2" for ease of installation. Next, find the depth and again add 1" -2". To find the length of the cover measure the height of the pallet and add 1/2 of the depth. In example: a pallet that measures 48" wide by 48" deep by 48" tall would result in a pallet cover size of 51" x 49" x 72". This size is very common and stocked by many distribution companies. Consider adding a couple inches to the height if you would like the pallet cover to be long enough to cover a portion of the pallet itself. If your cover will be in windy conditions it may be a good idea to order the cover a bit longer, then use a bundling film to secure the bottom of the cover to the wood pallet.

A centerfold cover is commonly used for larger, longer pallet loads. For this cover we again need to find our width, length and height. For a pallet 48" wide x 96" long x 48" high, we will measure the width plus 1/2 the depth, add 1" - 2" and use that number for the overall height of the bag. To find the length of the bag we measure the pallet length (96") then add 1/2 of each side depth (24"+24") this gives us a length of 144", we then add 4" - 6". This gives us a centerfold cover size: 150" x 74". The additional 4" - 6" in length are added for ease of installation, as this is needed for larger pallet loads. Most manufacturers' size capabilities restrict them from producing a gusseted cover for a pallet this size. The centerfold cover differs from the gusseted cover in that it is 2 dimensional and sometimes known as a lay flat bag or cover. Since we are installing a lay flat cover over a 3 dimensional pallet small amounts of extra material remain at the top of both ends. This extra material is commonly referred to as "dog ears" and doesn't affect the functionality or longevity of the cover. However, if you have a large load and would like a cover without "dog ears" and cannot go with a typical gusseted cover, an M-Fold cover is another option.

An M-Fold cover is needed on large pallets when manufacturing restrictions do not allow a centerfold or common gusset to be used. This cover is termed an M-Fold as it is the look created when the cover is folded in half. We will again need to find the width, depth and height of our palletized product. The length of our cover will again be the length of pallet plus 1/2 of each width and 1" - 2" additional inches. The next dimension will simply be the height of the pallet plus 1" - 2". The final dimension is one 1/2 of the depth plus 1" - 2". For example: a pallet 72" wide x 96" long x 72" high would be 96"" + 36" + 36" =172", then 74" and 36". Resulting in a 172" x 74" x 36" "m-fold cover. A common bread bag can help you to visualize the cover. Turn the bag on end and view one end of the bag as the top of your pallet. You will see one open gusset on each side of the bread bag. One negative to the M-Fold cover is its ability to catch and hold water in the exposed gussets. Making a couple of revolutions with a roll of bundling film can eliminate this issue. I have also had customers invert the covers to eliminate this problem. Doing this will improve functionality. However, the m-fold gusset is now exposed, which may or may not be aesthetic concern for you. Since Joe's palletized dog food bags are placed on a 48" x 48" pallet and stacked 48" high, he will be going with a 51" x 49" x 72" gusseted pallet cover. Now that we have the size and type of material, let's decide on a thickness.

MIL thickness of course refers to the cover's thickness as it is measured in millimeters. When choosing a thickness, always remember the characteristics of the material being used (briefly discussed earlier). We know that we are using a LDPE and that the load will be secured with stretch film under the cover. We also know that the outdoor exposure and transit times will be minimal. Mil thicknesses of 1 to 6 are most common for one-time use LDPE pallet covers. Most manufacturing facilities can produce polyethylene pallet covers from.0006 to.010 (commonly referred to as.06 MIL to 10 MIL). For Joe's company, a 1.5 MIL will be used, as aesthetics and marketing are more of a concern than durability. Using a lower thickness may offset the cost of having a more expensive color, printed cover.

When requesting a quote always be sure you're comparing "apples to apples". Some manufactures deal only in "full gauge" and others use "industry standard" or "nominal". If a company uses the latter, a 1.5 MIL product could actually be manufactured +/- 10% which would result in an end product anywhere from 1.35 MIL to 1.65 MIL (usually the lower). A full gauge product is just that, and you will always receive the full 1.5 MIL. This can be checked in house once you receive the product with a micrometer. We now are ready to order a White Opaque Gusseted 51" x 49" x 72" x 1.5 MIL (Full Gauge) pallet cover. Next, let's discuss Joe's printing options.

Printing your logo and company info, on the pallet cover can really take advantage of an often-overlooked marketing opportunity. Every manufacturing facility differs in their printing capabilities. However, most have the ability to print on at least one side of the cover in one color. Some manufacturers can produce a two-sided print using several colors. One-sided print is very effective if the pallet is placed with the correct side facing potential customers, i.e. the flat bed trailer, retail store or store yard. The information displayed in the print is really up to the customer. Having a company logo / business card on an electronic file can always speed up the process. No matter what is placed on the cover, make sure to see the final proof and do not sign off on it until you are satisfied.

Pallet cover print is installed by using a "plate" which is a rubber stamp made from your artwork. This plate comes with an additional one-time fee. The plate costs cover any graphic artwork that may be required, as well as the cost of creating the custom rubber stamp. The distance from the artwork to the top and bottom of the cover are selected, as well as the distance between each print. The print is typically applied randomly to the bag meaning that it starts and stops in a different location from one bag to the next. Lead-time for a printed cover can be anywhere from 1-5 weeks depending on the manufacturer and the detail requested. Joe wants a great marketing piece, but is on a budget as well. So he will go with the one side, one color random print. We now have a Gusseted Pallet Cover in White Opaque with 1C1S Random print 51" x 49" x 72" x 1.5 MIL (full gauge). Now that Joe has the vitals selected, how many will he have to purchase?

Minimums on a pallet cover like Joe's are usually high and may require a large initial investment. Many manufacturers will require a minimum run of at least 3,000 lbs, but some may be willing to run a minimum of 1,000 (often referred to as 1M). All manufacturers think in terms of poundage rather than number of covers. To convert Joe's covers into poundage, we will need to do some quick math. For a cover 51" x 49" x 72" x 1.5 MIL we add the first two numbers, multiply by the third number, take that number and multiply it by.0015 then divide by 15.

100 x 72 = 7,200, 7,200 x.0015 = 10.8, 10.8 / 15 =.72 pounds per cover

Now, if we know that our manufacturer is dealing in "Industry Standard" or "Nominal" rather than full gauge, we will need to adjust the math a bit. Change the.0015 to.00135 to represent the actual MIL thickness.

100 x 72 = 7,200, 7,200 x.00135 = 9.72, 9.72 / 15 =.648 pounds per cover

If our chosen manufacturer has a 3,000 lb minimum (3M) we divide 3,000 by our full gauge weight,.648. Resulting in a minimum order size of roughly 4,600 pallet covers.

It is standard in the packaging industry for manufacturers to overrun or under-run a product +/- 10%. The final order may have +/- 460 covers. Knowing the conversion to poundage is also helpful when determining the number of covers per roll. 100 bags on a roll at.648 pounds each would put us around 65 lbs a roll, which should be pretty manageable. Smaller roll sizes may require an up-charge based on poundage. Skid weights of 1,200 to 1,700 pounds are most common. If your salesman says his or her custom order minimum is 2 skids, the number of covers can be found by doing some quick division. In this case we'll say skid weight is 1,400 lbs, so we divide that by the 65 lbs per roll giving us 21.5 or 22 rolls. We then take 22 rolls x 2 skids, 44 x 100 covers per roll = a minimum order of roughly 4,400 covers. Manufacturers will typically have price breaks at 3M, 5M and 10M pounds. Depending on the usage, it may be a good idea to find out how much can be saved by upping the order size. Joe knows that his manufacturer's minimum poundage is 3M.

We now know the "ins and outs" of polyethylene pallet covers, and are ready to get some price quotes!

Inside the Maguire Correctional Facility - San Mateo County's Jail

Have you ever wondered how an inmate is booked into a jail? As bail bondsmen, clients and others often want to know the inner workings of the jail. Here is an inside look at the process, a "what happens behind closed doors" if you will, at the San Mateo County Brendon P. Maguire Correctional Facility, named after the San Mateo County sheriff who helped found it. The MCF opened in 1994. It is six stories tall and its top five floors are used to house inmates. Its intake and administration areas are on the ground floor.

Toy Bin Shelf

No less than 18,000 inmates are booked into Maguire each year. Most of those incarcerated here are either awaiting their trial or in the process of it. Several more are also awaiting transportation to another agency if they have already been sentenced to do time in a state or county facility.

Toy Bin Shelf

According to an official MCF mission statement this jail serves the community by assisting the courts, law enforcement agencies, and inmates and their families by offering a safe and secure environment. It also helps to ensure that defendants will appear in court and complete their jail sentences.

The Maguire Correctional Facility provides for its inmates' medical, nutritional, hygienic, legal and spiritual needs. They also have several services that are designed to give inmates an opportunity to improve their lives, both during and after their incarceration, in an attempt to reduce recidivism.

Jail Arrival
An arrestee's incarceration begins when he is bused into the MCF's Vehicle Sally Port, which looks like a huge gray underground parking garage. This is the entry point in to the prison for arrestees escorted by police (it is also a transport and pick up point). But in this parking structure there is no exit ramp. The doors are electronically operated and security is maintained via a visual monitoring network that is linked to a Central Control Room. The inmates are then taken, in handcuffs, to the pre-booking area to wait while their police paperwork is completed. If they are suspected of being under the influence, they will be given breathalyzer and alcohol blood tests. This process takes about 30 minutes.

Booking & Inmate Search
Next, in the Intake Section, the actual booking process begins. Their personal information is entered into a computer system and they are assigned a county ID number or, in the case of return visitors, their number is located. During intake, they are also given a jail number and housing assignment, they undergo a medical interview, and have their personal property inventoried and sealed in a bag (more on all this, later on). The last steps in this process are getting a photo taken and being fingerprinted.

But first, it's on to the Search Cell: All of the inmates searched for both their own and staff safety, to make sure nobody is carrying any concealed weapons or contraband. There are two types of searches. One is the simple pat down of hands over clothing. The second is the strip search. Contrary to what you see in the movies, the strip search
requires a supervisor's written approval and is mostly performed on parolees, self-surrenders and "weekenders".

Mental & Medical Reviews
The Department of Correctional Health services gives every new Maguire inmate a medical interview to find out what medication, if any, they are taking and their physical condition. They also receive a mental health interview to determine their state of mind, and whether or not they are a danger to themselves or others. Physical and mental interviews also play a key role in helping to determine where they should be housed during their stay.

Inmate Identification & Classification
Mug shots are taken of each prisoner to document his appearance, as well as any distinguishing marks, scars or tattoos. These photos are printed up as "movement cards" that will accompany the inmate to his eventual housing. Last, an ID wristband, much like the kind used in hospitals, is placed on his wrist.

Inmates are fingerprinted in another section, using state-of-the-art methods that don't require ink. The fingerprints are then scanned into a database in case they are needed for future reference. Once this has been done, the inmates are placed in Holding Cells. These cells are a temporary location, but they help keep the arrestees secure and separated during the booking process. They are very much like waiting rooms, equipped with telephones and toilets.

Some of the more low risk arrestees, like those brought in on DUI charges, may be released on their "own recognizance," known as "OR". This means that they could end up being freed on the promise that they will return to court, without having to pay bail. The inmates are interviewed to determine if they qualify for OR, or need to be cited. It is also a first evaluation of their classification status.

The MCF uses a specific Classification Method for several reasons: to determine the inmate's housing assignment; ensure his safety; and to give him a coded level of incarceration (sentenced or un-sentenced, security risk etc). He is also classified by physical attributes like height and ethnicity.

If an inmate is to be imprisoned, he is sent to Dress In. In this section, he learns where he will finally be housed. All his personal clothing is taken, sorted and then put in Maguire's secure Property Storage Unit. There, it is hung in blue plastic bags on an "automated property bag retrieval system" which is much like the clothing conveyor belts found in dry cleaning stores. The inmate is given an orange jumpsuit to wear so that he can be easily identified and, just like a rank and file military uniform, because it make him equal to every other inmate.

Housing Pods, ie Jail Cells
Inmates live in General Housing Pods, which are actually two stories tall. They look like grim Spartan college dorm rooms in that they are small, two person cells surrounding a gray-carpeted day room. There are 24 cells on each level and the Pods are supervised by a deputy in an open station at the center. Assigning an inmate to a cell once again depends on his classification, the nature of the offense, criminal history, physical size and gang affiliation.

Inside each cell, two bunk beds can be found bolted into the wall, along with a writing desk, shelf, plastic chair and a stainless steel toilet that offers no privacy. Twice daily, prisoners must go through a body count and inspection. This ensures that they're all accounted for, jail rules are followed, they and the facility remain safe and secure, and that they are keeping themselves and their cell clean. Inmates must line up with their backs against a cell wall with their arms extended for shorter inspections, which can be as frequent every two hours.

Central Control, a hi-tech monitor system that could be considered the brain of the facility, controls all of the doors and systems. It is also a communication center that is manned around the clock, keeping an eye on daily prison activities and serving as a command post during emergencies.

Specialized Maguire Programs
During the time that inmates must serve their sentence, a variety of programs are offered to them. In addition to medical and mental care, MCF Correctional Health Services provide dental care and drug/alcohol AA recovery meetings and domestic violence groups. They also have access to religious services, a law library, AIDS Awareness and parenting courses, and an Office of Education where they can get a GED, along with business links between the MCF population and community organizations.

The Maguire facility offers some inmates a chance to earn money by working in its industrial sized kitchen (which outputs 2700 meals a day) and laundry room (laundry is exchanged once a week), under correctional supervision. They can also spend money at the prison commissary. There, inmates charge items on their MCF accounts to buy food, personal hygiene items, writing/post materials, over the counter meds and phone cards.

Visiting & Release
Visiting hours vary, excluding Mondays. A day care center with toys, books, crayons and snacks was created free of charge by the Service League of San Mateo for those inmates who are visited by their children. When an inmate has served his time, or bail has been posted, and he is ready for release, he is taken to the Men's Dress Out Section where his things are returned to him. Once his paperwork is complete, he is free to go.

We know that prison changes some inmates for the better. They learn to keep the behavior that got them there in check and use their time behind bars to better themselves. But many leave no better off than when they came in. They still lack social and employment skills and may still be addicted to drugs. They may return to a life of crime and ultimately... return to the Maguire Correctional Facility.
