Laundry Room Organizers For a Family on the Go

For busy families in today's modern world, laundry areas can look more like disaster areas. During the winter, moms and dads across America stand vigilant guard by their front doors on snowy days. Their offspring are barred entry when they return home from frolicking in the snow, sent to the back door and straight to the laundry room. This may prevent water from getting tracked through the house, but it also results in an explosion of outerwear in the laundry room

Toy Bin Shelf

Families with children who are old enough to do their own laundry can encounter even worse laundry room traffic jams. Clothes hampers get mixed up, detergents become scattered about, and there is never a good place to hang anything. No one is at fault. It's just that when a lot of people are constantly using the same small space, it is inevitably going to become a mess in a hurry. Luckily there are many cheap, simple, and efficient ways to organize your laundry room so that even the messiest member of your family has no excuse not to keep things nice and neat. Here are a few examples.

Toy Bin Shelf

Triple Storage Bin with Black Frame and 2.5 inch Casters

This convenient bin, with three separate and removable storage bags, is a great way to organize any number of things in the laundry room and around the house. Use it to store sporting equipment, as a hamper for dirty clothes, or for keeping all your kids' toys in one place. It is a piece of cake to assemble and is equipped with wheels for easy mobility. It is made of a durable steel frame and has a wire frame bottom in order to keep the bags off of your floor. The whole unit measures 31.5 X 35.5 X 17.75" so there is more than enough room to separate your whites from your colors or to keep your kids' dirty soccer uniforms far away from everything else.

Rectangular Storage Container

A bustling household can't seem to have enough of these handy storage units. The rectangular containers are made out of canvas and are lined with a resilient water-resistant vinyl, making them perfect for damp clothes. The Flexible Krush technology, designed to accommodate over-stuffing, and strong handles also make this a great bag to pack full of towels and take to the beach. In your laundry room, your garage, or in the trunk of your car, there is no limit to the number of places you will find to utilize these handy and affordable storage containers.

Laundry Station

Keep your laundry area tidy by storing all the essentials in the same place. This steel organization station wheels around on rolling casters so you can have what you need where and when you need it. One side has two shelves that are perfect for detergent, bleach, fabric softener, or dryer sheets. Above these shelves is a small wire tray that slides out and allows for even more storage possibilities. The other side holds a spacious, removable canvas bag for clothes and sheets that are dirty or clean. All of this is topped off by a set of melamine doors, which work great for folding clothes or for pre-treating laundry. Putting all your eggs in one basket might be a bad idea, but keeping all of your laundry necessities in one place will make the room seem twice as big.

Over the Door Iron Board Holder

How many times have you dug around looking for your ironing board, only to realize you had no idea where the iron itself was? Now you can store all of your ironing needs together and out of the way with this clever device. It can be simply hung over the back of the door, or you can physically mount it to any wall using the included mounting hardware. The unit is made from heavy steel and sports a bright white epoxy finish. It has a space for your iron, as well as two bottle holders (convenient for starch or a spray bottle), and it can easily hang any "T" frame ironing board.

Commercial Laundry Cart

Just like the ones at the Laundromat, this handy cart will satisfy all of your laundry needs. It has a rod on top so you can hang your button down shirts and dress pants fresh out of the dryer and not have to waste time ironing later. The oversized laundry basket is the perfect solution for when someone else hasn't taken their clothes out of the dryer yet and you need to use it. Be nice and fold them or just plop them in there and let them deal with it later. There is also a bottom storage shelf for detergents or other cleaning products. Have your kids moved back home after college? Buying this commercial laundry cart will let them know that a coin-operated washer and dryer set might be your next big purchase.

None of these storage solutions are going to make your life less hectic. There are still going to be errands to run, deadlines to meet, and unexpected disasters to mediate. But with these handy organization units at least one part of your house can be in order.

Decluttering Blueprint - Step 1 - Getting Started

Are you drowning in stuff you don't use, you don't love, or you don't have a convenient place to store? It's time to tackle your clutter!

Toy Bin Shelf

I know what you're thinking-"Yes, but...I don't have time to get organized and my space is so overwhelming, I don't know where to start."

Toy Bin Shelf

Being organized isn't an add-on to what you currently do; instead it's replacing a poor habit with an effective and an efficient behavior. Thus, it takes less time to be organized than to be disorganized. And second, getting started is easy-just follow the Decluttering Blueprint; you will get all the guidance you need to change your thinking, change your actions, and create a home you're proud of.

Start decluttering now with these 5 simple strategies to curtail the volume of non-essential items (clutter) you bring into your home.

1. Always take a list to the supermarket. Consumer experts report two-thirds of the purchases we make at the grocery store are things we didn't intend to buy. For example:The aroma emanating from the bakery can make you feel hungry and when you're starving you buy more food. Solution - Shop after you've had something to eat and buy only the items on your list. Children's toys are purposely positioned on lower supermarket shelves so your little ones can grab items and put them in your cart. Solution - Schedule grocery shopping when you can go alone and buy only the items on your list; you'll save time and avoid any fuss with toddlers. Supermarkets are arranged to entice you to buy more. For example, the dairy section (an essential area for most families) is in the back of the store. The purpose of this layout is to draw you deep into the store with the intention that you'll buy more along your route. Solution - Take the shortest path to the dairy section and buy only the items on your list. Research suggests the longer you're in the market the more you'll buy. Solution - Don't go down every aisle. Shop only in aisles that have the goods you need, buy only the items on your list, and get in and get out as quickly as possible.

Buying items that aren't on your list often results in duplicates and clutter. In addition, it's not the best use of your assets (time and money).

2. Say "No" to family or friends who want to give you their hand-me-downs. If the people around you are offering items they no longer need or have room for, ask yourself these questions:Do you love the item?Do you have a convenient and attractive space available for the item? Will you use the item enough to bring it into your home?

If you can sincerely answer "Yes" to all three questions-by all means accept the article. Otherwise, it will be just another piece of clutter.

3. Steer clear of spur-of-the-moment purchases. Impulse buying typically short circuits the opportunity to flesh out where you'll keep an object and how much you're going to use it. Think twice about:Bringing home vacation souvenirs.Signing up for magazine subscriptions and book or DVD clubs. Late night buying on QVC and eBay. Shopping in the mall or specialty stores.

These are just material things-you may find them appealing but it isn't likely you need any of them. Save your money for paying down debt, building a strong financial foundation, and doing good in the world.

4. Reduce the amount of junk mail you receive. Did you know that in the course of one year you can receive as much as 500 pounds of junk mail? Don't let this stuff steal your space or your time reading it any more:Join http://www.stopthejunkmail.com. It is a fee based service that allows you to stop junk mail (such as catalogs, coupons, contests, etc.) delivered to your mailbox by the US postal service. Or, visit http://www.obviously.com/junkmail if you're a DIY type and want a free guide to reducing unwanted advertising.

If after applying this strategy you still get a trickle of junk mail, immediately dump it in your wastebasket or recycling bin.

5. Inform gift givers you would prefer a gift certificate, gift card or a charitable donation in your name, if they want to acknowledge a special occasion. You probably have gifts you have never used and will never use taking up space in your home. But you hang on to them because you don't want to offend the gift giver. If this sentiment reflects your thoughts, it's time to reframe your thinking. Keeping gifts you will never use aren't an asset...they're a liability. They rob you of your space.

Send gifts you aren't using to a charitable organization and let someone else have the opportunity to enjoy them.

Practicing these strategies for a period of 21 days will help you form an important decluttering habit. At the same time, you will find that incorporating this thinking into your life will save you time and money and give you the confidence needed to tackle the next steps of the Decluttering Blueprint.

Tips to Organizing Your Kids Room

When it comes to organization, children's rooms can be big challenges. They usually aren't that big to begin with so finding places for all of your child's things isn't always easy. Plus, keeping the area organized for more than a couple of days may seem like more than you could ever hope for.

Toy Bin Shelf

The good news is you can organize these rooms and teach your children valuable lessons about the importance of organization from an early age. Here are some tips to help.

Toy Bin Shelf

Too Many Toys

One big problem is many kids' rooms is the abundance of toys. Kids love choices but too many choices ends up making big messes. A good solution is to store some of those toys temporarily. Work with your son or daughter to choose a few (five or six is a good number) toys they love playing with.

Now take all of the other toys, divide them up into several storage containers, and take them to a self-storage unit. The beauty of these units is that you can get your stuff out at any time so whenever your child starts getting bored of the toys at home, you can take a trip to the storage unit and select a replacement batch. Be sure to store the others while you're there. With this approach, you keep toy clutter to a minimum and reduce the number of new toys you need to buy to keep your children entertained.

Arts, Crafts, and Blocks

Being creative is definitely enjoyable for children, but their creative supplies can be hard to keep organized. Here's a solution: bins. You can find a wide range of bin designs to fit your current needs. For example, if you already have shelf storage, you can find bins that will fit on the shelves. You can find cloth, wicker, and plastic varieties in many different sizes and prices. Another option is to purchase a storage unit that includes bins.

Next give each type of creative supply a different bin. This means you'll have more bins but your children will be able to keep them organized. Coloring books and crayons might go in one bin while all of their Lego blocks go in another. Make sure to label the bins so your child can find what they want easily. If your son or daughter can't read yet, use pictures that are hand-drawn or made on your computer.

So Many Clothes

Children always seem to have more clothes than their parents even though they typically have less room for storing them. Not to mention kids don't enjoy keeping clothing organized most of the time. To get organized, first sort through your child's existing clothes. Throw away any that are stained or damaged. Donate any your child no longer can or wants to wear. With the rest, sort them by season. If you don't have lots of closet space, you don't want to take up valuable space with sweaters during the summer. Invest in some storage containers and put away out-of-season clothing. Under the bed storage containers work well but if space is limited you can always keep them in a storage unit until they are needed. Now you have freed up space for the clothes your child actually wears. Now you can do the same thing with the clothes in their dresser.

Once you've whittled down the amount of clothes you need to make sure the clothes stay organized. First, be sure to label the dresser drawers so children know what goes into which one (and so they can quickly get dressed). Second, reward them for putting away their laundry. For example, you might give them a nickel for every piece of clothing they put away or maybe you give them a sticker each time and after five times they get a bigger reward, such as a trip to the zoo. If your children are too young to put up the clothes themselves, have them help you by getting hangers, folding items, or putting clothes away in lower drawers.

With these strategies, your child's room will be more organized not just for a day but a long time to come. Plus, you'll be teaching your kids valuable lessons they can use as they grow up and even when they have their own children's rooms to organize.

Tips for Living in a Staged Home

So you've had a professional home stager come to your home that's for sale and you've implemented everything that he or she recommended to get your home sold fast and for top dollar.

Toy Bin Shelf

You've removed your family photos so that buyers can imagine themselves living there rather than feeling they are encroaching on your private space.

Toy Bin Shelf

You've de-cluttered and have discarded, donated, given away or stored off-season clothing, extra furniture, toys, files, papers, books, magazines and other items so that buyers will feel like there's adequate storage in your home.

You've organized your kitchen cabinets and closets so that buyers will get the impression that you are a homeowner who really takes care of the home.

But now what? You're thinking "We live here. How can our home possibly continue to look like it's show-ready all the time?"

Well, relax, it doesn't have to look show-ready ALL the time, but there are some things you can easily implement so that you can become show-ready at the last minute.

• Now that you've pared down to what is necessary for living in your home for the next few months, this is not the time to be buying more toys and kitchen and electronic gadgets, etc.

• Don't shove everything you don't want to be visible into kitchen cabinets and closets at the last minute. Buyers will open every drawer and door unless it's a piece of furniture. Remember, we want buyers to think that there is adequate storage and you are an organized homeowner.

• Purchase a basket or box with a lid that you can put keys, today's mail, bills, calendars, unread newspapers, etc. into and keep it in an out-of-the way place such as a shelf in a closet, or in an appropriate place, like on a desk. Besides eliminating a cluttered appearance, doing this will also protect your privacy.

• Buyers don't want to see your toiletries or hairdryer on the sink vanity in the bathroom. If you don't have a closed cabinet under the sink in which to store these, purchase baskets to store these items.

• Buyers also don't want to see your half-used bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and soap bars in the shower or bathtub. Think "hotel". Would you want to check into a hotel room and find that? Purchase one or two of those plastic or metal shower totes with a handle so that you can easily put all of these items into it and store away under the sink or in a linen closet.

• Your home stager most likely recommended that nice, new and fluffy towels be displayed during showings (remember, think "hotel"). So, you have two options:

- Keep the "nice" towels, neatly folded, on the towel bars, and hang your towels on a hook or hooks on the back of the door. Remove the latter and put in the washing machine or laundry bin prior to a showing.

- Fold the "nice" towels neatly and then roll them up. Store them in a linen closet or under the sink. Then prior to the showing, remove your daily towels from the towels bars; then unroll and hang up the display towels.

• Since children only play with probably 20% of their toys, and you've pared them down (the toys not the children) at the suggestion of your home stager, make sure you have storage bins or chests in which to put these items. They make for a much neater appearance.

• Whether you're selling your home yourself, or have enlisted a real estate agent, pets and all evidence of pets, need to be removed before a showing. Not every buyer is a pet lover, and some are allergic to pets, so for these and other reasons, take the pet and food bowls, leashes, beds, litter box, toys, cages, etc with you if possible or bring to a neighbor's, friend's or family members' home while yours is being shown.

• If you make the beds and fluff up the pillows every day, you don't have to scramble at the last minute in case you get a call that someone wants to see your house.

• If you and your family get in the habit of putting dirty dishes in the dishwasher immediately after using them, this makes for a much quicker last minute clean up of the kitchen.

• Another suggestion is to take a laundry basket and walk through the home and put everything in there that you don't have room to store away. This works best for a home in the suburbs rather than for a city apartment. The laundry basket can be stored in the basement or garage.

There are many other things that should be done prior to showing your home. Keep an open house checklist handy so that you know exactly what to do.

The Eighteen-Gallon Recycling Bin

The 18-gallon recycling bins are a box shaped recycling bin, which is good for any type of material you want to recycle. You can get them with and without lids, which make them a stackable type of container.

Toy Bin Shelf

When you are recycling paper, you want a different container for each type of paper. The magazines, glossy printed flyers, newspaper inserts, phone books, envelopes, computer paper, old letters and paper packaging can all go into the same recycling bin. Newspapers however require their own bin just as corrugated cardboard and plastic lined drink boxes both requires separate containers.

Toy Bin Shelf

Plastic will not decompose in a landfill. Some plastic containers can be recycled into other products. Unlike aluminum cans, which can be recycled into another aluminum can. Recycled drink bottles will not come back as another drink bottle. It may come back as a shower stall, plastic bags, plastic toys, motor oil bottles and the list goes on. There are several different types of plastic, so you will have to check with your recycle center to see what types of plastic they are equipped to take. There are some recycle centers, which are known as "All Plastic Recycling Centers", which means they will take any type of plastic. Just to give you an idea, plastic goods are assigned a number to grade them for recycling. #1 and #2 are for containers, #4 is for bags, and #7 is for mixed plastics and is not recyclable.

Plastic bottles are a valuable recyclable material. Tops of the bottles should be removed and placed in with the other regular plastic items. Plastic grocery bags can be recycled. Many grocery stores will have a container at the front of the store for customers to place their used grocery store bags into. Polystyrene cups, food trays and egg cartons will not biodegrade. Some plastic recycling centers will not accept the polystyrene items, but some due. Try to reduce your use of this material.

Plastic #5 can be recycled, but it has very little market value when it has been recycled. You are better off reusing them at home. These are the containers you will find cottage cheese, sour cream, butter, yogurt, etc.

Each different type of plastic will go into a different 18-gallon recycling bin. Recycling centers prefer you not lump them all together.

Glass is recycled by the color of the glass container, clear, green and brown and the recycling centers prefer they are separated in those colors. Paper labels can be left on the containers. Glass product such as light bulbs, mirrors, sheet glass, and Pyrex must be placed in a container away from the bottles because they have a different glass composition than the bottles. Compact florescent bulbs can be recycled at your local IKEA store.

Food cans are not made of aluminum but should be recycled. Aluminum cans are a valuable recyclable. Aluminum foil and foil packaging are also just as important to recycle as the cans. They can be used to make small engine parts.

Paint can, aerosol cans can be recycled. These are also considered to be hazardous waste, so they must be separated from other metals. Retain the paper labels because it is necessary for the recycler to know the material, which was in the cans. Try to keep the lid with the can it belongs to.

Copper is one of the most recyclable of all the metals. The alloys used with the copper to make up the copper products are also recyclable. When recycling copper, it only takes less than 15% of the energy it took to mine, mill, smelt and refine the copper in the first place.

As you can see you will have plenty of uses for the 18-gallon recycling container. The number of containers you will need will depend entirely on the number of materials you will be recycling.
