A Complete Preschool Lesson Plan - Jungle Theme

Hop on the Safari Bus. We are going on a Jungle Tour in the Preschool Classroom. It's going to be so much fun for the children, and I guarantee you are going to enjoy yourself.

Toy Bin Shelf

Here are some ideas on how to get your jungle theme lesson plan started and some ideas to keep it going for as long as your preschoolers are interested in the activity.

Toy Bin Shelf

Here's how to introduce the theme:

Day 1. Ask the children if they know what the word 'jungle' means. Explain what a jungle is for those who may not know, and have a picture of a jungle so they can associate your description with the picture.

Day 2. Have books* in the library on jungles and animals that live in the jungle. They can be a mix of cartoon type kids books and real-to-life kids books. (Your local library should be able to help you out with finding books.)

Day 3. Find pictures* of jungle animals from magazines, books, the internet, calendars, or anywhere you can find them, laminate them, and post them on the walls around the classroom.

Day 4. Place jungle themed toys on the toy shelf and place a few jungle themed puzzles in the puzzle area

Day 5. Find a CD with jungle themed music and play that throughout playtime after you talk about the jungle.

*If any pictures or books you have, show any sort of tribal people, you could make tribal masks for a creative art activity and the children can wear them in the dramatic play centre.

You can also place some paper towel tubes, pipe cleaners, markers, googly eyes, etc., on the art shelf and see which animals they create.

Here are some examples of animals you can introduce through books and pictures:
Panthers
Snakes
Bears
Monkeys
Zebras
Giraffes
Elephants
Cheetahs
Alligators
Rhinoceros
Birds
Hippopotamus

Feel free to have an open discussion with the children. Talk about the colors of the animals, their teeth, their eyes, which animal does each child like best, etc.

If you want, you can also touch on what the animals eat but make sure you keep it simple. The children at this stage in life don't need to start learning about the words carnivores, herbivores, etc. Just keep things simple like saying, a panther eats meat, a monkey eats fruit, a giraffe eats leave from tall trees, etc.

The children will probably want to know where the animals homes are in the jungle. This information should be easy to find through the books and pictures you have. If not, the library will have books on the individual animals you are talking about which will give you the information you need.

Here are some examples to get you started:

The animals will find homes within their habitat (the jungle) which they make into a home for them and their animal families.

Animals homes in the jungle could be a nest, a den, a burrow, under a rock, in a hollow tree trunk, up high in trees, etc.

You can then talk about which animal might live in a tree, which one would live under a rock, etc.

To incorporate this theme into the different programming areas of the classroom, some examples could be:

Creating a jungle themed dramatic play center:

Make a jungle jeep, safari jeep or car out of a box or, place 4 chairs together with a stand up steering wheel in front of one chair.

Get some safari looking hats.

Children's binoculars.

Pretend cameras.

Post jungle animal pictures on the wall and watch your preschool children go wild over this theme. :)

Here is a sandy sensory idea:

Place some sand in the sensory bin.

Find some small rubber or plastic sand animals* you would find in the jungle. (Snakes, beetles, insects, etc.)

Place these items in the sensory bin and your done.

*I have had great success finding almost everything I need at dollar stores. Search them out, I am sure you will find what you are looking for.

Just be as creative as you can with this theme. The possibilities are endless if you put your mind to it. When you are listening to the jungle music you can incorporate creative movement into this. Ask the children to pick an animal they would like to pretend to be and move to the music like that animal. There is no right or wrong movement, the children will have so much fun.

You could also move this theme into outdoor gross motor play. You could bring some of the dramatic play items outside like the hats, binoculars, cameras etc. Place some stuffed toys here and there around the play yard (make sure they get washed when you bring them in for the day) and go on an outdoor safari hunt.

The children can ride their bikes and go on their own tour, they can go on a "lion/bear hunt," you can run from animals 'scare' you, you can tip toe and walk around animals that are 'sleeping'.

Remember to use your imagination and expand on what the children are doing and saying.

Have a wonderful Jungle Themed Lesson and go wild with adventure.

11 Neat Ways to Donate, Sell Or Give Away Used Books

Books, like many of our treasured belongings, often simply rot away on our shelves and become clutter because we no longer have a current need for them, but because we loved them, we don't want to just throw them away. But, left unused for long periods of time, the fate of our beloved books is to collect dust, turn yellow, fall apart, and even smell bad. Objects that go unused for years create stagnant or stuck energy in our homes that affect our mood, drain our energy and may even make it harder to function and use your storage shelves easily.

Toy Bin Shelf

Is this what you intended when you bought the books? I know parting with books is challenging. It helps if you can focus on the benefits and value of passing them on. Like sharing the insights or entertainment you got out of the book with others.

Toy Bin Shelf

By donating or giving away books you no longer need, you get to contribute value to others while also making more room in your own home or office to function with ease. Think of how much shelf space you could reclaim.

Plus, if you donate your books (including books on tape or CD) to a charity and itemize deductions, you can deduct the value of the books on your income tax return. Web-based tools like It's Deductible make it easy to figure out what the books are worth.

Where to Give Your Books Away

Your Local Library - Unfortunately, many libraries don't take book donations anymore. But some do, so it is worth finding out if there is a library near you that will take your books, even if your hometown does not. Note: Libraries often take Books on CD and Books on Tape, Videos, DVDs, and Music CDs and Tapes too.
JustGIVE.org - This site provides a list of places to donate just about anything. Whether you want to donate Books, Furniture, Household Good and Clothing, Computers, Cars, Cell Phones, Pet Supplies, Eyeglasses, your Hair, or even your Organs, you can find a resource here.
Friends of Libraries, USA - This group is currently accepting donations to rebuild libraries affected by hurricanes and more. You can ship books to them. Address: 1420 Walnut St, Suite 450 Philadelphia, PA 19102-4017 Call: 215-790-1674 or 1-800-9FOLUSA folusa.org
Vietnam Veteran's Association - Offers both pick up service and drop off service. There is a limit on the number of books you can donate at one time. Not all areas have pick up service, but some offer a monthly pick up.
Freecyle.org - List ads for free and give books or anything else away. Be careful in screening who you allow to come to your home. For safety, arrange a public meeting place to deliver the books.
BookCrossing.com - This website is a really fun way to share books. You register your book, leave it in a public place, someone else picks it up, notes it on the website, then does the same. You get to track your books travels after you give it way.
Housing Works in NYC - 126 Crosby Street, NYC 10012 (212-334-3324) You can drop off or ship books to them. They work to end homelessness and AIDS in NYC.
Craigslist.org - Free ad listing website lets you give books and anything else away. Be careful. Avoid giving your address to strangers. For safety, arrange a public meeting place to deliver the books.
Bridge to Asia's Textbook and Journal Donation Program - Got old textbooks and professional journals? This group wants college, graduate and professional level teaching and research materials. They accept books, journals and other forms of information both used and new. Visit bridge.org
PaperbackSwap.com - Here you can mail your books in (usually costs .59 per book)and get credits. Then you can use your credits to get books you want.
BooksThroughBars.org - What better way to rehabilitate someone than through education and reading? This program provides books to prisoners. Before sending books, make sure you check the rules on what types of reading material each prison allows.

Also consider FIRSTBOOK.org - They don't take books, but you can donate to help kids in need get their "first books."

BONUS Clutter Flow Tip: Set up a donation bin, just as you would a recycle or trash bin. Collect books and other items you no longer need. Once a week, on the same day as trash day, check if the bag or box is full and donate as needed. I keep a donation back on a hook in my closet for clothing I no longer need. Automate the process any way you can and set up a reminder in your calendar or phone. Once you get in the habit it will feel almost effortless.

Kitchen Island Ideas for Great Custom Kitchen Islands

Use kitchen island ideas to better understand how to create a more functional and comfortable kitchen. Using custom kitchen islands means having the most appropriate island for your home and kitchen area based on your kitchen space and your needs. Kitchen island ideas take us back to the farmhouse kitchen, even back to medieval times when a large worktable was used to do most of the preparation work.

Toy Bin Shelf

Besides meal preparation, the kitchen can become a gathering area for family and friends if there is enough space. Since so much happens in the kitchen on a regular basis, getting the layout right is important. The kitchen island can serve as an additional eating area, and food preparation can easily be done there. In a large kitchen, the kitchen island can shorten the distances within the working triangle (sink, refrigerator and range or cooktop) and make it more efficient.

Toy Bin Shelf

Here are kitchen island ideas to consider when planning your kitchen:

1. Kitchen islands work best in larger L, U or G-shape kitchens. If the kitchen is too small, the kitchen island will become an obstruction and hinder easy movement. The best custom kitchen islands for small to midsize kitchens are a portable butcher block or kitchen cart for food prep or extra storage.

2. Include a ventilation hood overhead to eliminate smoke, steam and cooking odors if your kitchen island is going to have a cooktop. The range hood should extend beyond the cooking area by 3 inches or more on the sides for proper ventilation. Using the correct fan size will ensure that removal happens as intended. Have a fan capacity of about 50 cubic feet per minute (cfm) for each square foot of cooktop area.

3. A second kitchen sink can be included on the kitchen island. Use a sink that is deep enough for washing large pots and pans, and consider equipping the kitchen island with a trash compactor, garbage disposal, recycle bin and even a dishwasher. Cleanup will be much easier when these appliances are close by the sink.

4. Allow adequate countertop space on both sides (left and right) of the kitchen island if a sink or cooktop will be used. Include at least 15 inches of countertop space on each side, and if your kitchen is large enough, allow even more space. You can never have too much countertop space in a kitchen. Also, rounded countertop corners help protect everyone from bad bruises -- this is true about all kitchen countertop corners.

5. Additional kitchen island ideas are to consider using shelf space on the sides of your kitchen island for cookbooks, collectibles or storage. A built-in TV works here, especially if it faces the family room. Or a microwave may work well for heating up after-school snacks and cooking foods quickly.

6. Countertop material for the island doesn't have to match the rest of your kitchen countertops as long as it is harmonious with the room's overall design. You may want to splurge on solid surfacing here, for example, and use laminate on the other countertops. A butcher-block countertop is ideal for chopping, while granite or marble works well for baking purposes and for rolling pastry dough.

7. Maximize natural light by having windows and skylights, and keep kitchen wall surfaces light in color to reflect daylight. Custom kitchen islands work great by using pendant or recessed fixtures to direct light onto the kitchen island and other work areas. Electrical codes will likely require that electrical outlets be located on the sides of fixed kitchen islands, not on the top, to prevent electrical shock.

Use custom kitchen islands ideas to help you know how to create an attractive area that will perform a variety of useful functions. Designed correctly, kitchen islands will make your work area more functional and efficient and will be enjoyed by everyone for many years. Read as many kitchen island ideas as you can on using an island to improve the functionality and comfort in your kitchen -- after all, your kitchen is most likely the most popular room in the house.

How to Organize Your Household Doodads & Hardware So You Can Find Anything!

Everyone has those little miscellaneous things around the house you need but can't find when you need them. You know you have them "somewhere" but you always have to hunt all over the place looking for them.

Toy Bin Shelf

Things like hooks, felt pads that stick under things to help them slide, rubber stops to keep things from sliding, twistie ties, batteries, lightbulbs, random nails and screws, various glues, tapes, and on and on. Sound familiar?

Toy Bin Shelf

And how about all those extra doodads that come with things you buy? Like that new phone you bought. It has a doodad with it that allows you to hang it on the wall -- but you aren't hanging it on a wall. Or a new bookshelf that came with extra pegs so you could add another shelf if you like. Or perhaps your new cell phone has a belt clip with it that you never use. You know what I'm talking about.

Perhaps you thought you were the only one that had a hard time finding homes for these little clutter challenges. It turns out everyone (except maybe Martha Stewart) gets stumped by them. You can find these things scattered randomly in nearly every home. As an organizing consultant, I see them all the time. No one knows where to put them. Why? Because they seem to defy categorization. Here's how to give all of them a home.

Create a Hardware Store Area in your home. Many clutter challenges are solved by creating your own little "Home Depot" Hardware Store. I've created these in laundry areas, garages, basements, linen closets or any large area where it is convenient, but out of the way. You can give the area all sorts of names. Utility Closet, Supply Area, Gadget Department, whatever appeals to you.

Some homes have a utility area but still can't find what they need because it's a jumbled mess. The trick to making this space work for you is to treat it as a place where you will need to "find" things. Not as simply a place to "put" things.

In order to find things, you need to come up with some creative sub-categories to help you group all those little things you only have one or two of. Here are some of the categories I've come up with to sort things that defy easy categorization in the "Hardware Store".

Things that Hang Things - Group hooks, picture hanging kits, nails, screws and such in the same area. Sort like with like and put each type of thing in their own containers. Things that Stick Things Together - Gather all your assorted glues, tapes, stick on magnets, twistie ties, velcro, and put them in the same area. Things that Fix Little Problems - Here's where you put felt pads that stick under things to help them slide, rubber stops to keep things from sliding, the porcelain repair kit for the chip in the bathtub, etc. "Spare Parts" Department - Today, every home needs a "Spare Parts" department to put all those little doodads you may need, but could not replace if you did need them. Like the hang-the-phone-on-the-wall thing. But, remember if you know you will never hang the phone on the wall, just toss it! There are many things people keep that should just be tossed. Like the extra screws from that new desk you put together. Out it goes. Be realistic about whether you will really ever use those spare parts and your life will be much simpler! Another key to making the Spare Parts Dept. work is to contain and label the parts so you, and everyone else you live with, knows what they go to.This categorizing concept works for all the other little home supplies you have on hand, too. Electrical Supplies like extension cords should all be grouped together. Light Bulbs and all other lighting related things should be grouped. TV related cables and stuff, Stereo related cables and stuff, and so on.

But hold on. We aren't done yet. To make the whole system work there are three organizing principles you must apply to each of the departments you set up.

Contain all the items. The containers don't have to be fancy or expensive. You can dig around in your recycle bin and find lots of great free containers. I've even been known to recycle sturdy shoeboxes, empty tissue boxes, strong tea boxes, and the plastic containers that eggs, tomatoes and premade salads come in. After all, there is no better recycling than repurposing all that packaging out there. Think Vertical wherever you can. Instead of stacking things on top of each other in a container, see if you can stand them up next to each other. This saves an amazing amount of space. Label Everything. If you label the areas, you and your family members are 80% more likely to put things back in their designated homes. And, most importantly you will be able to find what you need, when you need it, quickly.

TIPS FOR FAMILIES: As a way to get the whole family involved in using your new Hardware Store area, why not have a little fun with it? Let the kids help with the labeling and finding containers. Perhaps have a contest to creatively name the area, the categories within it, and choose the labels to put on things and give little prizes. The more involved they are in the process, the more successful your new system will be. And it's a great way to teach your kids organizing and categorizing skills that will last a lifetime. There you have it. Once you get this hardware / supply / utility area set up and organized, you will find things all over your home that now can be given a proper home. Bit by bit, your clutter will transform into handy, useful items. You'll save time and money, so why not treat yourself to that pedicure or massage you've been wanting. You deserve it!

Four Easy Ways to Organize Your Entire House

If you're like most people and not a topnotch housekeeper whose home would pass the white glove test at any given moment, you can still keep your place organized with everything neatly in its rightful place. Keeping clutter at bay while also having things easily accessible is actually possible with just a few simple ideas and just a tiny bit of elbow grease.

Toy Bin Shelf

1. Keep like items together

Toy Bin Shelf

It's really common sense, but you'd be surprised at how many people store like items in various locations throughout their homes. Teach the kids to keep all of their school work and similar items in one designated area. This not only cuts down on clutter but keeps their homework safe in a central location. It also saves time and eliminates the frustration of searching for papers that mysteriously get lost.

Toys and sporting equipment should also be kept together instead of shoes and uniforms thrown in the hall while bats and catcher's mitts land in the living room. Use medium to large, inexpensive plastic containers and clearly label them. If you have a garage or some separate area such as a laundry room or entrance way, install shelves and stack the containers there for easy access.

2. Creatively tackle clutter

Keep a small and decorative basket or container of some sort at the bottom of the stairs. Instruct family members to use the basket for things that need to be put away or that need to be returned upstairs. Be sure to make use of hidden areas like under the bed and put shelves in closets to add even more storage space.

Cabinets or bookshelves that are tall but narrow take up the least amount of space and can be put just about anywhere. Make use of vertical spaces as well as the empty space around the ceiling that's perfect for either storing or displaying items on shelves.

3. Organize in increments

Instead of feeling overwhelmed and depressed at the prospect of trying organizing your entire house in one day, give yourself a break and tackle the task in smaller increments. This way you'll be more productive and actually accomplish a lot more in the long run.

Take a leisurely walk throughout the house and jot down all the areas that desperately need some serious organization. Try your best to see your home with a fresh perspective and then create a schedule or plan and stick to it. Post it on the fridge or somewhere you'll see it often as a reminder of your vow to keep your home neat and organized.

4. Maintain your newly organized home

Set aside 15 minutes each day to walk through every room in your house, de-cluttering as you go. Carry a laundry basket with you to easily carry the items and transport them back to their rightful place on your return trip.

Have a designated bin or container to keep all of those to-do lists or important mail, receipts and papers in one place until you can deal with them, which should be at least once a week to avoid a pile-up of clutter.

Four Easy Ways to Organize Your Entire House
Toy Bin Shelf

Full Size Beds On Sale Chairside End Tables

15 Steps to a Clutter Free Home

It's time to get into the habit of letting go of excess stuff, rather than finding a place to stuff it. Having to walk around stuff or over stuff does not make for a peaceful living environment. Let's go room by room and take care of some of the most common clutter problems.

Toy Bin Shelf

1.) Kitchen: ask yourself what items do I use daily?

Toy Bin Shelf

These items really deserve the primetime space in your kitchen. They should be within arms reach in the best location available. Watch out for space hogs in the kitchen such as multiple coffee mugs, plastic bags and cleaning products.

2.) Next ask yourself how many of each of these items you need to have a reasonable amount on hand.

Do you have 6 of something but only use one. This is a common problem. Setting limits will help you maintain an organized kitchen easily. Any broken, stained or chipped items need to go.

3.) Donate or discard your extra items, or in the case of glasses or dishes store them in long term storage until needed.

That is only if you have room in or for long-term storage. If you already have a long term storage problem go ahead and get rid of your excess, unless its an item that you can not replace like grandma's good china, in that case get rid of something else and store grandma's china. Remember to periodically go through cabinets and drawers to purge extras and replace worn out or damaged pieces.

4.) Clear your counters: the most visible part of your kitchen.

Start by clearing all items into boxes or onto trays. Take this opportunity to clean your counters thoroughly. Now put back only the items that you use daily. Ex. Toaster, coffeemaker, crocks of utensils. Only display decorative items on you countertop if you have plenty of space to do so. Otherwise decorations in moderation should be on the walls to save valuable real estate in the kitchen.

5.) Discourage paper piles from forming by creating a RAF file or as some people call it an action file.

A RAF file can be anything that can hold 3 files or folders. RAF stands for read, act, and file. As paper comes into your house you need to use your RAF file to place each piece either in to read, to act (meaning you need to do an action) or to file. Each piece of paper you save is important for one reason or another so you need to be able to find it quickly. Then of coarse there is the trashcan, use it regularly. You can also set up binders with clear plastic pages for things like receipts, recipes, take out menus, school information and frequently called numbers.

6.) Clean off your fridge!

Scale down or eliminate old refrigerator magnets or at least move them to one side. Clear everything off the front, put important items such as take out menus in a binder or in your RAF file. Save your kids best artwork in a plastic bin with their name on it, be sure to write their age on the back with an acid free pencil or acid free pen that you can find in the scrap booking section of any store. Once the fridge is clear, only put back current items.

TIP: Keep a wipe off calendar on the front of you fridge, update it the 1st of every month from you pocket calendar that you keep in your pocketbook or briefcase. That way you won't miss any appointments or meeting or double schedule yourself.

7.) Bathroom: Clean out your medicine cabinets.

Dispose of expired medicines and toss bottles of perfume, lotion and nail polish that are almost empty. Keep on the products that you like and use. Don't keep products that you either didn't like or were not effective just because of what it cost you. In the long run they cost you more in space wasted.

8.) Clean out stuffed drawers.

Ok we have all done it at one time or another shoved one more item into an already full drawer. Now it's time to change all that. Go drawer by drawer take everything out and ask yourself "Do I love this?" Do I need this?" Why am I keeping this?" The answers to these questions will tell you what you need to do. Then you keep it, donate it or toss it. By lightening up your drawers you will reduce stress and be able to find the things you need faster and easier.

9.) Clear bathroom counter.

It makes it so much easier to get ready in the morning and reduces stress when your bathroom counters are clear. This is also a time save because cleaning is a breeze. See tip #12 for the solution to where to put all the stuff you cleared off the counter.

10.) Use your wall space.

If you're hard pressed for storage solutions look to your walls. There are many options to create storage and reduce clutter on countertops. Ask yourself is there anywhere that I can add a shelf or shelves? Maybe a wall soap dish or toothbrush holder. Look on EBAY for hotel towel holders they hold 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels and 2 washcloths each.

11.) Create a peaceful retreat.

Most bathroom tubs and showers seem to be over flowing with bottles of shampoo, conditioner, bath toys and body washes. Again start by removing all items; clean the surfaces well with a soap scum-removing product. Then only put back the products that you use on a daily basis. Consider getting a shower caddy if you don't already have one and a stick on basket or bag for the kid's toys.

12.) Make personal bath totes.

Each member of your family should have their own container to store and transport their own personal bath items. This container can be a small plastic crate, a wicker basket or any other small container that can hold your items neatly. Placing each family members items in their own container makes it easy to store these things under the bathroom sink or in the bathroom or in the linen closet until they are needed. This also keeps their personal hygiene items together making it easy to find their comb or hair detangler and its no problem to move to another bathroom when company comes.

13.) Create a peaceful haven.

Your bedroom should be a place where you can rest. It is not the place to do work or other stressful activities. Do not allow things not related to sleep to accumulate there. This room should contain a bed, dresser, nightstands, lamp and maybe a chair or bench. Do not over crowd your bedroom with furniture it will make it feel small and will not promote peace. Your nightstand should be clear except for reading glasses (if you need them), a book or magazine (just one, not a pile), alarm clock and maybe some tissues. Start by clearing the room of all excess stuff, only put back those items that promote peace and rest. Donate or store extra items elsewhere.

14.) Remember the one in one out rule.

Once you have your house down to where it looks and feels good for every new item that you acquire you will need to donate, sell or give away one item. One for one, it's the only way to maintain the balance that you have achieved.

15.) Place 4 containers in your laundry room.

There are 4 containers every laundry room should have. Three of them can be boxes, bags, laundry baskets or whatever you have on hand. The last one is a trashcan. Label your containers, donate, mending, rags and trash. The donate box means that you continually separate out items that are past their prime but still have some wear or are too small. The mending means that you need to do a small repair. Rags means they have holes or bad stains so you can use them to clean or stain furniture, cotton or wool clothing make the best rags. The trashcan is for items found in pockets, dryer lint and other trash. This way it doesn't pile up on your dryer eventually making its way to the floor.

There you have it 15 steps to a clutter free home.

The Do's and Don'ts of Litter Box Care

Q: What kind of litter should I use?

Toy Bin Shelf

A: There are so many types of litter available in pet stores today that it can be overwhelming when trying to decide what to pick off of the shelf!

Toy Bin Shelf

Clumping litter is almost always the best choice (save for certain medical situations such as a paw laceration) because it allows for daily removal of urine from the box. Non-clumping litter means that either there is excessive waste of litter when the entire contents are emptied every day, or alternatively, it means that the smell of ammonia and urine strengthens throughout the week until it is finally emptied. The only non-clumping litter that prevents ammonia odor buildup is silica crystal litter, but silica litter is not recommended since the the crystals are hard and sharp, creating an unpleasant surface for to walk on.

Clumping litter also allows you to monitor the volume and frequency of your cat's urination, and as a cat owner this very important to note since particular urine habit changes can be indicative of serious health issues. Non-clumping litter disguises cats' urine habits and makes it far more difficult to notice problems when they arise.

Two types of non-clumping litter that do deserve kudos for being (relatively) dust-free and non-tracking are pine litter (multiple brands available) and Yesterday's News made by Purina, made with recycled newspapers. These non-clumping litters play an important role for kitties that have healing wounds on their extremities since they are generally too large for pieces of litter to get stuck in and contaminate open wounds.

Eliminate scented litters from the types you are choosing amongst, and this further narrows your selection. Scented litter means more chemicals, and while it might mean a more pleasant odor for us as owners, it is almost sure to be unpleasant to our cats, and they end up ingesting the chemicals when grooming themselves later, licking the litter dust particles that settled onto their coats while in the litter box. Additionally, scented litters are not necessary; when litter boxes are properly maintained, there should not be any significant odors present that require masking.

Q: How often do I need to empty the litter box?

A: Clumping litter is the most hygienic and practical litter type that exists. Maintenance is minimal if you are diligent about daily scooping. The litter substrate remains nice and fresh, and the litter can simply be topped up once weekly to maintain an appropriate volume inside the box. Litter should be kept at least several inches deep to allow cats a satisfactory substrate in which they can dig and bury their movements. Maintaining a good depth in the box at all times also means that the bottom and sides of the container will remain relatively clean since they will have little to no contact with urine and feces. Once per month the entire litter box can be emptied and cleaned with an unscented, gentle soap and warm water. Once the box is completely dry it can be refilled with fresh litter.

Boxes filled with non-clumping litter need to be emptied daily in order to avoid the unpleasant buildup of ammonia odor and feces.

Q: How many litter boxes do I need?

A: The "Golden Rule" is that the number of litter boxes needed is 'n + 1.' The 'n' stands for the number of cats who live in the home, so the number of litter boxes needed is the number of cats you have plus one extra.

Cats are not always willing to share their amenities, even if they have lived in the same home with multiple kitties their entire lives! Just because two cats use the same litter box does not necessarily mean that they are 'comfortable' doing so; it is simply the best option that they have available to them and so they make do with what they have.

Additionally, some cats who are forced to share their bathrooms experience real distress, not just mild discomfort from the suboptimal situation. It's not uncommon for dominant cats within multi-cat households to guard litter boxes and ambush kitties who are lower in the social hierarchy as they exit their litter boxes. Cats who experience frightening, stressful, or painful situations correlated with litter box use are prone to start eliminating outside of their litter boxes as they attempt to avoid the same adverse situations from reoccurring. Having an extra box present means that there will always be at least one bathroom freely available that will not be guarded.

It's also important to remember that by requiring our cats to repeatedly use the same space for elimination (let alone requiring them to share that space with other cats!), we are already requesting a significant sacrifice from our felines. They would not naturally eliminate in the same place so repeatedly if they were outdoor or feral cats.

Along similar lines, the reason for having more than one litter box for single cats allows them to enjoy having their options; many cats prefer to have one box for urinating, and another one entirely for passing bowel movements. They don't want to use the same space for both which is why 'n + 1' holds true even for single cat households.

Q: What kind of litter box should I get? Covered? Uncovered? Deep sided? Small, large, extra-large?

A: The best litter box is the roomiest one that you can find and fit within your household!

Most commercial options that are available, even the extra-large sized models, are still too small! The average litter box allows one cat to fit inside it and turn around within its confines, similar to human porta potties. And if you stop to think about it, comparing litter boxes to porta potties is a rather accurate analogy, and should provide the right kind of motivation needed to improve on our cats' "elimination situations!"

Imagine being a cat who has to run into the same washroom where another cat just went -- there are old urine clumps and bowel movements present that create an odiferous environment and our noses are nowhere near as sensitive as our cats' noses are! It's no wonder that (non-medical) inappropriate elimination is such a common problem - how many people prefer to find their own clean location in the woods somewhere rather than using porta potties? Sometimes cats end up resorting to the same behavior when they use laundry piles as surrogate litter boxes!

Litter boxes should allow your cat to be comfortable while they are doing their cat business: generous in size, shallow side-wall depth, and easy to enter and exit.

While covered boxes do prevent some scatter, most cats prefer non-covered versions because they instinctively wish to be able to look around and ensure their safety before adapting a vulnerable position as they must in order to complete their task(s) at hand. Covered litter boxes are more cramped and obstruct cats' views: cats in covered boxes are unable to see their surroundings and check for people or other pets walking by, and they also impair their ability to hear others coming as well. Covered litter boxes are particularly uncomfortable for older, arthritic cats, overweight cats, and large cats. They tend to have very deep sides, so the entrance is more difficult to step in and out of. Some covered litter boxes also come with door flaps, and these should absolutely not be used. Cats should not have to work in order to access their bathrooms, and they definitely don't like being smacked by the door flap in the rump as they push their way through the entryway. Door flaps can cause cats to quickly develop aversions to using the corresponding litter boxes.

Rimmed litter boxes are uncovered litter boxes that have separate plastic rims which snap onto their tops, securing pet litter liners in place, and helping to minimize litter scatter. Rimmed litter boxes are far from ideal because while they may help prevent a small percentage of litter scatter, they also decrease the amount of room available to cats in which they can maneuver, and they also detract from litter box accessibility since cats must step over much wider rims when entering the boxes compared with regular models.

The less comfortable a cat is with their litter box situation, and the more difficulty they encounter when using their bathroom, the more time they actually spend inside of them. Cats with cramped litter boxes spend extra time digging to make satisfactory holes for their elimination and, similarly, they try just as hard to find ways to cover their movements properly. So, ironically, many litter box systems developed to try and decrease litter scatter actually increase the overall amounts of scatter created! Comfortable litter boxes result in much less litter box activity altogether... which translates into less scatter!

The product that I have found that works best and keeps both cats and owners happiest is actually the 'under-the-bed-storage-bin' which can function as an extra-long, shallow, regular width (relative to commercial options), roomy "litter box." Under the bed storage bins are made by Sterilite and Rubbermaid and can be found at most Walmarts, Zellers, Canadian Tires, and many other stores, for approximately the same prices as regular litter boxes.

Q: Where should my litter box(es) be placed?

A: Below is a list of criteria detailing where you should avoid placing litter boxes. Do NOT locate litter boxes by:

Noisy machines like laundry washers, dryers, garborators and dish-washers

Food and water bowls (cats do not want to eat and drink where they urinate and defecate, just like humans!)

High-traffic areas like doorways and landings (cats prefer a bit of peace and quiet when using the loo, and if they are ever scared or startled by passers-by, they can develop aversions to the litter box and its location)

Cramped corners (although we may want to hide the unsightly litter box, cats prefer to have good visibility when doing their business)

Children's play areas (keeping kitty waste and children's toys away from each other keeps everyone happy!)

The kitchen area (even the best litter box set up will have some slight smells in the immediate post-use phase, and you don't want to be wondering why your cuisine always tastes better than it smells)

If you have multiple levels in your home, do not isolate the litter box(es) to the basement - there should be an easily accessible box on each level of the home, especially if there is a geriatric cat, or if there are more than one cat in the household (if litter boxes are located together, then one cat can guard access to them, or ambush another cat using them)

When the unsightliness of litter is an issue that is preventing one from being located on a particular level, although covered options are not considered ideal, there are litter box-containing constructs that still allow for large, shallow litter boxes to be placed inside and also function as esthetically pleasing furniture pieces.

Q: How do I prevent litter from tracking everywhere?

A: There is no magical method here unfortunately, but the following are some very useful tips:

PetMate The Litter Catcher Mat (46"x32") - this mat covers a large surface area, is extremely efficient at trapping litter, is soft and flexible on cats' paws and is easily shaken out for cleaning - avoid hard plastic, ridged litter mats that are unpleasant on cats' paws to walk over.

Keep a hand broom and dust pan or a small handheld vacuum nearby for escapee particles!

Keep the litter level a couple inches below edge of the litter box

Purchase low-tracking litter substrate

Q: What about litter liners?

A: Cats do not like litter liners, so it is best not to use them. Simply keep the depth of litter adequate and scoop frequently enough that the bottom and sides of the litter box stay clean.

Q: My litter is advertised as 'biodegradable' - can I compost the cat litter?

A: Yes, you can compost your cat litter. However, it's not recommended that you use the compost of carnivores to fertilize vegetable gardens, because of the variety of pathogenic microbes that their excrement can contain. Cat litter should be composted separately from your kitchen compost. PC Green cat litter is a popular eco-friendly, clumping, absorbent product that works well for composting owners.

Q: My cat litter is advertised as 'flushable' - should I flush it?

A: It's best if your litter can be composted rather than using 6 to 18 litres of water to send the litter somewhere else for composting. However, if you cannot compost the litter, then simply throwing it away is the next best option, since it will biodegrade in landfills as well.

Q: I've heard that cats can be toilet trained, and that using a litter box isn't even necessary. Is toilet training my cat a good idea?

A: While it sounds like a very appealing idea to not have to take care of the litter box, toilet training cats is not a good idea. Healthy, happy cats are those that are permitted expression of as many of their natural behaviors on a daily basis as possible. Eliminating a cat's ability to dig comfortably in a substrate in which they can urinate or defecate would substantially reduce their quality of life. Requiring a cat to balance on a slippery toilet rim multiple times per day would be a significant stressor to them, and this task would become more and more difficult and uncomfortable with age and the onset of arthritis and muscle wasting.

While training cats to do other tricks is a good idea and can enhance their quality of life by providing mental stimulation, when it comes to kitties' bathroom habits, it's best to provide them with a great litter box setup, and reserve the toilet for human use only!

8 Steps For a Great Baby Nursery

Oh the excitement of preparing for your first baby. There is nothing that compares!

Toy Bin Shelf

Don't feel over-whelmed; it is a big job, but these tips will give you a good place to start. Good preparation now will help ease the transition once you bring your bundle of joy home and the reality of lack of sleep, diaper changing and early morning feeding sets in. If your nursery is prepared ahead of time and organized properly, both you and baby will have less stress and a place to be together.

Toy Bin Shelf

Tip 1: Clear Out Clutter You should have a separate room for baby to call his/her own, if space allows. Clear out all items not related to the purpose of the room. Get creative and find another place for your home office and overnight guests!

Tip 2: Baby Closet As your baby grows, it will be very important for the closet in his/her room to be dedicated solely to items belonging to the child. Prepare now. Move items not baby-related to another area. Consider letting go of some items. This will save time after the baby arrives.

Tip 3: Creative Storage Space Babies require a lot of baby-related gear. You will need places to store everything. While shopping for furniture and other items, be sure the items have plenty of storage space included. Utilize vertical space by utilizing hooks and shelves on the walls. Put the dresser in the closet, if space provides. If you are utilizing a rocker and ottoman, get an ottoman with a hinged lid for storing baby blankets, etc. Utilize a hanging shoe bag near the baby changing table for storing powder, lotion and diapers. Get creative!

Tip 4: Baskets and Bins Decorative baskets and colorful bins are great places for storing items such as toys, books, etc. You can usually find them with cloth linings relatively inexpensively. They not only contain the baby clutter, but look great in the room as well.

Tip 5: Like Things Together A basic principle of organizing is to group like items together in the same place. Put baby bathing supplies (towels, wash cloths, powder, hairbrush, etc.) together in a basket for transporting to the area you will bath baby. Put changing supplies (diapers, rash cream etc.) near the changing station and put an extra set in your diaper bag.

Tip 6: Toy Storage There are many ways to store toys: toy chests, bins, baskets are just a few. Pick out your favorite item that fits in your space plan. Do not keep adding storage for toys. Most children have far too many toys and typically only play with a few items. Donate or garage sale the rest and keep the clutter to a minimum.

Tip 7: Give It Up Babies outgrow clothing, furniture, toys, etc. relatively quickly. You don't have to keep everything. Pick only a few sentimental items to treasure (hand/foot print, baby shoe, first hair curl, special clothing item, etc.). Purchase special items to display or keep those items and discard the others.

Tip 8: Growing Space Children grow quickly. This means that they will out grow their current clothing. Have a special bin or basket for donating clothing that no longer fits and items your child no longer needs. Be sure to leave growing room in your child's closet. As your child gets older, clothes, toys and other items will take up more room. Learn to leave some drawers and shelves empty. This will create less stress for you and your child. You eliminate being out of room again and again.

Have a happy baby homecoming!
